There are 29 schools in the Portland district that are at risk of collapsing during a major earthquake. The 29 schools are unreinforced masonry buildings, which are known to be one of the most dangerous buildings during an earthquake. In October, the Portland City Council passed an ordinance saying all URM building owners must notify people and post signs on the building stating this building is unsafe in an event of a major earthquake.
