Optimum Seismic joins leaders in talks at USC Emergency Preparedness Summit
We recently had the honor of partnering in the Emergency Preparedness Summit 2022 presented by the University of Southern California Price EXED Forum for Local Leaders. Topics included cyber security, critical infrastructure and funding, economics of disaster and disaster management, and of course — earthquake resilience.
USC asked us to moderate the earthquake panel, which included L.A. Chief Resilience Officer Aaron Gross, Temblor CEO Ross Stein, and Southern California Earthquake Center Director of Communication Mark Benthien. Many positive steps are being made to make communities more resilient to earthquakes, but there is still much to do. Will you be part of the solution? L.A. Business Journal profiles success of Optimum Seismic
Ray Valentine’s multifamily property owner clients were in a panic. He had one year to submit a seismic retrofit plan to the city and six more to complete the retrofit. “I was looking for companies that could do all the seismic retrofit work from soup to nuts and just take this issue off my hands,” he said. “And Optimum Seismic seemed to stand out from the other companies.”

Earthquakes rock L.A. as apartment buildings rattle
The earthquake struck at a depth of 16.1 miles, sending tremors from Los Angles to Orange County, Santa Barbara and Bakersfield. People also felt the Feb. 27 quake in Santa Clarita, Glendale, and Santa Monica, the USGS said.

Scientists say San Andreas Fault can bring another killer quake
Larger earthquakes at the center of California’s San Andreas fault line are more likely than previously thought, according to the journal, Geology. Researchers say serious quakes happened there in the past and are likely to happen again. Analysis shows evidence of rock displacement equating to a 6.9 magnitude, and even larger in the central part of the fault.

Can animals detect disasters? Thailand tales make the case
Minutes before surging walls of water up to 30 feet high smashed into coastlines Thailand’s coast, animals seemed to sense peril and tried to flee. Elephants ran for higher ground, dogs stayed indoors and flamingos left low-lying nesting areas. Buffalo were seen pricking up their ears, gazing out to sea, and stampeding up a nearby hill.
