More than 60 million people participated last month in the 10th annual Great ShakeOut, a global drill that originated here in earthquake-prone California. It’s a great opportunity for people to check on the status of their emergency supplies, practice duck-and-cover techniques and review plans with loved ones on how to keep in touch should they become separated. Yet another life-saving practice — frequently forgotten during this exercise — is to assess our buildings for structural viability. After all, people aren’t hurt because the ground shakes.
