What the Great Pyramid Can Teach Us About Earthquake Resilience

New research on the Great Pyramid of Giza provides insight into how the structure has remained standing for more than 4,500 years despite repeated earthquakes in the region. Scientists studying the pyramid’s vibrations found that its natural frequency differs from the surrounding soil, which may help reduce the amplification of seismic shaking. Researchers also noted that the pyramid’s broad base, symmetrical shape, and strong foundation contribute to its long-term structural stability.
While experts caution that the pyramid was not necessarily designed specifically for earthquakes, the study highlights the importance of strong structural design and proper foundations in seismic performance. It also serves as another reminder that preparing buildings before a major earthquake occurs remains critical. Seismic retrofitting helps strengthen vulnerable structures, improve safety, and better protect buildings and occupants when strong shaking happens.
