Mega-floods and monster quakes: We need to prepare for both.

There has been a lot of talk and media coverage lately about the impacts of climate change on California, and the growing likelihood of intense mega-storms that could flood Central Valley areas and wreak havoc among communities to the tune of up to $1 trillion in economic loss.

These “ArkStorm” scenarios are much like estimates of earthquake damage from the “Big One”. Both need to be taken seriously if we are to remain resilient against the threats that nature poses to us.

It seems overwhelming to think about, but ignoring these issues means eventual suffering will be much worse. Preparedness is always the better choice over recovery.

New metric for resilience can benefit communities

New metric for resilience can benefit communities

Oregon State University has a new model for predicting the resilience of communities and their recovery time following a massive earthquake and tsunami. The work is important because of the high probability of a major quake occurring along the Cascadia Subduction Zone where the study was done.

Earthquake patterns more predictable than thought

Earthquake patterns more predictable than thought

We may be able to predict big earthquakes better than previously believed, according to research using machine learning to analyze decades of earthquake data in California. Algorithmic evaluation showed some predictable patterns, indicating it may be possible to assess how likely it is a large earthquake will hit a region over the next few years.
