A newly released map from the California Geological Survey reveals which parts of the state face the greatest potential for damaging earthquake shaking, down to the address level. Using millions of earthquake scenarios from the U.S. Geological Survey, the data highlights high-risk zones such as the Bay Area, where violent to extreme shaking is possible along the San Andreas, Hayward, and Calaveras faults. Experts warn that all of California is vulnerable, with factors like soil type influencing how intense shaking can be.

While the map does not predict when the next quake will strike, it makes one thing clear: preparation is essential. For owners of vulnerable soft-story buildings, seismic retrofitting is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of structural failure, protect lives, and safeguard property when the inevitable earthquake hits.

Golden Gate Bridge to Undergo Final Phase of Seismic Retrofit Project, South Tower to Get Fresh Coat of Paint

As you’re likely aware, the Golden Gate Bridge did not suffer any real damage during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 — the Bay Bridge wasn’t so fortunate. That is because the bridge is designed to withstand a fair amount of ground shaking, and likely would not collapse even in a very strong quake. It could, however, suffer significant damage in the event of a major earthquake with an epicenter closer than Loma Prieta, and that damage could put the bridge out of commission for months or even years, which would have major economic impacts for the Bay Area at large.

‘Sleeping giant’ fault beneath Canada could unleash a major earthquake, research suggests

A major fault in the Yukon, Canada, that has been quiet for at least 12,000 years may be capable of giving off earthquakes of at least magnitude 7.5, new research suggests.

Based on the amount of strain the Tintina fault has accumulated over the past 2.6 million years, it is now under an amount of stress that could lead to a large quake within a human lifespan, researchers reported July 15 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The finding may require experts to rethink the earthquake danger in the region, the study authors said

Magnitude 6.1 earthquake strikes Turkey, causing about a dozen buildings to collapse

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, causing about a dozen buildings to collapse, an official said. At least two people were trapped in the debris of a collapsed building.

The earthquake, with an epicenter in the town of Sindirgi, sent shocks that were felt some 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the north in Istanbul, a city of more than 16 million people.

These are some of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded

The powerful earthquake that struck off eastern Russia was one of the strongest ever recorded.

It measured 8.8 in magnitude and hit early Wednesday local time in the North Pacific Ocean, triggering tsunami alerts across Russia, Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, and the U.S. West Coast late Tuesday U.S. time. Despite its strength, no major damage or injuries were reported.

Another earthquake struck Northern California Sunday for the second time in less than two weeks. The 5.4 magnitude temblor hit 30 miles south of Eureka, shaking homes with a more brutal force due to the shallow depth of the quake. “My refrigerator moved 2 feet,” Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes told CNN.
