California’s new balcony inspection laws reflect young survivor’s courageous advocacy after collapse
Consider the story of Aoife Beary, an incredibly brave young Irish woman who advocated for better balcony safety. She testified before the State Legislature on behalf of her friends, many of whom died or were injured alongside her in a terrifying balcony collapse in Berkeley in 2015.
Beary died recently at age 27, but her legacy lives on in legislation that requires regular inspections and repairs of balconies, decks, stairways and other elevated outdoor structures. The balcony that severely injured Beary and killed her friends was weakened by extreme dry rot due to improper water protection and substandard materials.
Inspections must be completed by Jan. 1, 2025. If you have questions about how this law applies to your building, Optimum Seismic is happy to help. Click here to learn more.
