Resilience Takes Many Forms, Serves As Key to Healthy Communities

I spoke last month at a celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose legacy takes me back to my childhood where I learned from my mother that life is about improving the well-being of others. Dr. King, in his book “Strength to Love,” talks about the importance of service – using one’s gifts to build a spirit of brotherhood among all people. “Life’s most persistent and urgent question,” he said, “is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” I find meaning in improving quality of life and resilience in communities. The ability to withstand hardship – no matter the source –is something we should all work together to achieve.
