Recent seismic activity in California underscores the pressing need for earthquake preparedness, with Earthquake Warning California providing vital alerts and resources to assist communities in readying themselves for future seismic events. From El Centro to Malibu, Ojai to Salinas, recent earthquakes serve as a stark reminder of the seismic risks faced by Californians. Earthquake Warning California, operated by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), stands as a beacon of preparedness, leveraging state-of-the-art technology to deliver advance shaking notifications and essential resources, emphasizing the state’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology for public safety.
In response to the seismic threats, Cal OES has continued to lead in disaster resiliency efforts, exemplified by its implementation of the state’s Earthquake Early Warning System. This innovative system, launched on the 30th anniversary of the devastating Loma Prieta earthquake, utilizes ground motion sensors and advanced algorithms to detect earthquakes before they are felt by humans, allowing for timely alerts and automated protective actions. As California remains at the forefront of disaster preparedness, initiatives like Earthquake Warning California underscore the state’s proactive approach to safeguarding communities and enhancing resilience in the face of seismic hazards.

2,000 earthquakes in 1 day off Canada coast
Almost 2,000 earthquakes rocked a spot off the coast of Canada in a single day earlier this month, which could be a sign that new oceanic crust is about to be birthed via a deep sea magmatic rupture.
The quakes aren’t any threat to people. They’re relatively small and centered on a spot called the Endeavour site, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) off the coast of Vancouver Island.

Japan is still reeling 100 days after the Noto quake
Fishing boots. Their son’s beloved fishing boots—that is what Hamazuka Hiroyuki and Chiaki most hope to find under the rubble of their garage. The Hamazukas’ place in Suzu, on the northern tip of Japan’s Noto peninsula, is one of nearly 100,000 buildings that were damaged or destroyed when a massive earthquake struck on January 1st.

Something good came from 1899 Inland Empire earthquakes
San Bernardino saw less than half of its normal rainfall, 7 1/2 inches, during the 1898-1899 season, while a huge wildfire fueled by Santa Ana winds the first week of September swept across the south face of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Two of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded locally struck in the last half of 1899. A Christmas Day quake (estimated at magnitude 6.7) wreaked much damage in much of the Hemet Valley while an only slightly smaller quake in July was centered in upper Lytle Creek north of Fontana.

How a 6.6 magnitude quake 90 years ago transformed Utah’s earthquake science
SALT LAKE CITY — 1934 was an interesting year in Utah to say the least.
It remains the state’s hottest year on record and its third-driest, as drought conditions crept into a state already struggling through the depths of the Great Depression. It’s also when one of the largest earthquakes in state history rattled northern Utah and the Wasatch Front.

Swift Quake: Taylor’s SoFi show made the ground shake
Taylor Swift fans shook it off so hard in Los Angeles last year that seismologists say they moved the earth.
Some 70,000 fans jumped and danced so passionately during “Shake It Off” at SoFi Stadium that the tremors equaled an earthquake measuring magnitude 0.85.
Actually, since that shaking went on and on for several minutes, the movement demonstrated the equivalent power of a larger quake.
