The Oceanside Pier Bridge that was built in 1926 does not meet the current seismic and structural design standards. “The study is not done yet, but we feel the pier is safe to remain open,” Oceanside Public Works Director Kiel Koger said Tuesday in an emailed response to questions. “A complete seismic retrofit of the concrete portion will have to be addressed in the future and is anticipated to cost $15 million.” Finding money for the work could be is difficult because “Caltrans has informed the city that the bridge is ineligible for retrofit funds due to lack of vehicular traffic.”
