Only 14% of ‘soft-story’ structures compliant with L.A. seismic retrofit ordinance

Last week a Los Angeles City Council committee was briefed on seismic upgrades and to no surprise, only 14% of the soft-story wooden structure are now compliant but none of the concrete buildings have been retrofitted. Under the ordinance, most seismic retrofits occur within seven years.

USGS warning, earthquake drought will be over soon

California hasn’t experienced a big earthquake in years, and experts from USGS says this drought will end, with “destructive results.” Elizabeth Cochran, seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey said, “we’re going to dramatically see a change in earthquake rates.” Experts say California ignores these realities.

3.5 magnitude earthquake, wakes up Orange County

Wednesday morning Anaheim Hills was awakened by a 3.5 earthquake. The epicenter was close to the freeway interchange between highways 91 and 241. People reported the light shaking across social media.

California’s hospitals are scrambling to retrofit their buildings

By 2020, 418 hospitals need to meet seismic safety standards in California. This will cost tens of billion dollars and could jeopardize healthcare access, according to a newly released study. The California Hospital Association funded the Rand Corp. report.
