February is Earthquake Awareness Month, a fitting time (albeit coincidentally) for the city of Portland to start flagging schools and other buildings that could put people at risk in an earthquake. Warnings are being posted advising: “This is an unreinforced masonry building. Unreinforced masonry buildings may be unsafe in an event of a major earthquake.” More than two dozen schools are at risk and 1,500 buildings overall.
A handful of affected schools are slated for retrofits from a 2017 bond measure. It’s a positive first step, but there are still many other publicly used structures at risk What can you do to make your building safer?
